What is the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship?

Since its inception, the fellowship has accepted 934 scholars from 78 countries. As part of the APEC Scholarship Initiative, it reserves 12 openings per year specifically for scholars from developing APEC economies. The total number of recipients depends on MOFA’s annual budget.
Benefits of the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship
The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship 2025 provides recipients with several generous benefits:
- Monthly grants paid at the beginning of each month:NT$60,000 for professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows
- NT$50,000 for assistant professors, assistant research fellows, or doctoral candidates
- One round-trip, economy-class plane ticket for the most direct route between the recipient’s country of residence and Taiwan (up to a maximum subsidized amount)
- Accident insurance coverage of NT$1 million, plus an additional NT$50,000 medical insurance for accidental injuries
It’s important to note that during the fellowship period, recipients cannot receive any other scholarships from Taiwanese government agencies, public or private academic institutions. They also cannot engage in part-time work without MOFA’s consent.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the MOFA Taiwan Fellowship, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Be a foreign professor, associate professor, assistant professor, post-doctoral researcher, doctoral candidate, or doctoral program student at a related department of an overseas university
- Or be a research fellow at an equivalent level in an academic institution abroad
- Submit research findings in writing (at least 20 pages) to MOFA within 3 months of completing the fellowship
- Attend academic seminars and relevant activities held by MOFA and commissioned organizers during the stay in Taiwan

Successful applicants can begin their research in Taiwan as early as January 2025. If circumstances prevent immediate travel, it’s possible to delay the fellowship by applying through the local ROC (Taiwan) embassy or representative office. If approved by MOFA, the research must still be completed within the same calendar year.
