The Competition Format
The International Youth Math Challenge takes place fully online over the course of a week in July. The competition consists of three rounds of increasing difficulty:
Round 1: Qualifying Round
All registered participants complete a 2.5 hour online exam consisting of 20-25 short answer problems covering algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory. The top 30-50% of scorers in each country advance to Round 2.
Round 2: Semifinal Round
Semifinalists take another 3 hour online exam with 5-6 challenging proof-based problems requiring written solutions.
The top 5-10 scorers from each country qualify for the Final Round as their national team.
Round 3: Final Round
The Final Round is the ultimate test, consisting of just 3 highly complex problems to be solved over 5 hours. Participants can use any resources but must work independently.
Medals are awarded to the top global scorers:
- Gold Medal: Top 10% of finalists
- Silver Medal: Next 20% of finalists
- Bronze Medal: Next 30% of finalists
Certificates of Achievement and Participation are also awarded to non-medalist finalists. The top scoring country teams are recognized with an International Team Award.
Preparing for the IYMC
Training to compete in the International Youth Math Challenge requires dedication and hard work. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
