About the Scholarship
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at U of T is a comprehensive scholarship that provides citizens from Sub-Saharan Africa with access to relevant graduate education at one of the world’s top research-intensive universities.
The scholarship covers full financial assistance for the duration of the graduate studies, including travel expenses to Canada, tuition, housing, health insurance, learning materials, and more.
Prospective Mastercard Foundation Scholars will develop their capacity and networks to engage in diverse healthcare professions and ecosystems in Africa.
Upon completion of the program, scholars are expected to return to their home countries and contribute to advancing health outcomes through self-employment or working in health-related professions.
Courses Available
For the 2025-2026 academic year, the scholarship will be awarded for the following graduate programs:
- Master of Occupational and Environmental Health
- Master of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences
- Master of Health Administration
- Master of Financial Insurance
- Master of Engineering (Biomedical)
- Master of Biotechnology (for May 2026 start)
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a citizen and currently residing in a Sub-Saharan African country
- Be graduating or have graduated within the last 5 years from a partner institution of the Africa Health Collaborative (see list below) and have not yet started graduate studies
- Have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership qualities during undergraduate years
- Be academically admissible to one of the sponsored graduate programs listed above
- Demonstrate a desire and commitment to return home after graduation to contribute to economic growth and social development in Africa

- African Institute for Mathematical Sciences
- African Leadership University
- Amref International University/Amref Health Africa
- Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
- Moi University
- University of Cape Town

The deadline for submission is November 4, 2024 at 12 noon (Toronto time).
3. Graduate Program Application
If your scholarship application is approved by the Admission Committee, you will be notified in early December to proceed with the graduate application to your program of interest through the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies website.
